About the Awardee
Elena Marisol Varela, MD, MPH, is an internationally recognized pediatrician, educator, and physician-scientist whose career has focused on improving health outcomes for children and strengthening the systems that support pediatric care.
For more than 25 years, Dr. Varela has worked at the intersection of clinical pediatrics, population health, medical education, and health equity. Her research has examined how social and environmental factors influence childhood development, access to preventive care, and long-term health outcomes.
As Director of the Center for Child Health Equity at Northbridge University School of Medicine, Dr. Varela leads multidisciplinary teams of pediatricians, epidemiologists, behavioral scientists, community organizations, and public-health researchers. Her work has helped develop new models for integrating social-risk screening and community resources into routine pediatric care.
Dr. Varela is also deeply committed to mentorship. During her academic career, she has mentored more than 60 residents, fellows, junior faculty members, and physician-scientists, many of whom have gone on to leadership positions in academic pediatrics and public health.
She has authored or co-authored more than 140 peer-reviewed publications and has delivered invited lectures throughout the United States, Europe, and Latin America.
